Epiphanios 23 was an asekretis; in 678 he carried to Rome an letter from the emperor Constantine IV (Konstantinos 2) inviting the bishop of Rome to send representatives to Constantinople to discuss church unity; when he arrived, pope Donus (Donos 2) had died: Lib. Pont. 81. 3 ("per Epiphanium gloriosum a secretis"). Donus died on 11 April 678.
