Textual SourcesVita Antonii Iunioris (BHG 142 Addit.), ed. F. Halkin, "Saint Antoine le jeune et Pétronas le vainqueur", Anal. Boll. 62 (1944), pp. 210-225 (hagiography)

Ephraim 1 was of noble family (τῶν κατὰ κόσμον εὐγενῶν συμφυὴς χρηματίσας), he was a monk in the monastery of All Saints at Constantinople with Antonios the younger (Antonios 12); he was tempted by thoughts of leaving the monastery and abandoning the monastic life but resolved his difficulties after speaking to Antonios 12 about the matter: Vita Anton. Iun. (BHG 142 Addit.), 8. He was an old acquaintance of Petronas 5 from before his entry to the monastery (ἦν γὰρ ἀπὸ κόσμου φίλος αὐτοῦ γνήσιος); when Petronas 5 fell ill, Ephraim 1 visited him at Sts Kosmas and Damian and advised him to see Antonios 12; he then persuaded Antonios 12 to visit him; later he and Antonios 12 performed a night vigil and prayed for his recovery: Vita Anton. Iun. (BHG 142 Addit.) 10-11. The date was between 855 and 863 (see Antonios 12).
