Droctegang 1 was an abbot and a Frank, he was a messenger of the Frankish ruler Pippin (Pepin 1) to pope Stephen III (II) (Stephanos 8) at Rome and brought the news that Pepin 1 was willing to grant the pope's request for help against the oppression of Italy by the Lombards under Aistulf 1: Lib. Pont. 94. 16 ("subito coniunxit missus iamfati regis Francorum, nomine Trottigangus abbas, per quem misit in responsis omnem voluntatem ac petitionem praedicti sanctissimi papae adimplere"). In the manuscripts of Lib. Pont. his name is variously spelt: Rotdigangus; Rottigangus; Trottigangus; Droctigangus; and Drodigangus. According to Duchesne, Lib. Pont., p. 457, n. 20, he was the abbot of Jumièges and was given two letters by pope Stephen 8, one for Pepin 1 and one for the Frank leaders; see Codex Carolinus, nos. 4 and 5 (pp. 487-488).
