Diogenes 4 was a member of the staff of the strategos of the Thrakesioi Bardas 30; he was of noble family and a supporter of the veneration of icons; when Bardas 30 fell ill (in 819) at Smyrna, Diogenes 4 sought the intervention of Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite), then imprisoned in Smyrna; he was sent to consult Theodoros 15 and returned with his reply; presumably it was he who was sent back to Theodoros 15 to inform him of the repentance of Bardas 30, but this is not expressly stated: Vita B Theod. Stud., 300C (εἷς δέ τις τῶν ὑπ' αὐτῷ τεταγμένων Διογένης ὄνομα, τὸ γένος εὐγενὴς, τὴν πίστιν ὀρθόδοξος), Vita C Theod. Stud., 55f., p. 290f. (εἷς δέ τις τῶν ὑπ' αὐτῷ τεταγμένων, Διογένης καλούμενος, ἀνὴρ θεοσεβὴς καὶ τὴν πίστιν ὀρθόδοξος), Vita A Theod. Stud., 204BC (unnamed attendant - εἷς τις τῶν ὑπηρετοῦντων αὐτῷ μοίρας τῆς τῶν ὀρθοδόξων ὑπάρχων).
