David 31 was the son of Photeinos 5 and Eirene 5 and the younger brother of Antonios 12; he also had a sister, Theodoule 1; born at Phossaton in Palaestina, he went to live in Attaleia in Pamphylia with his siblings after the death of their mother; when Antonios 12 gave up his secular career to become a monk (in 825), David 31 was angry and stirred up a mob against the Stylite (Eustratios 4) who had given encouragement to Antonios 12; Antonios 12 reproached him for this; later, under the emperor Theophilos 5, when charges of malpractice at the time of the revolt of Thomas 7 (Thomas the Slav) were made against Antonios 12 and his relatives were threatened with having to pay compensation, David appealed to Antonios 12 who agreed to approach the emperor and take responsibility: Vita Anton.
