Daniel 8 was magister militum in Italy ("quidam Danihel magister militum"); during the papacy of Leo IV (Leo 121) (847/855) Daniel went to the Frankish emperor Louis (Lodoïchos 1) and accused another magister militum, Gratianus (Gratianos 2), of plotting to betray Italy to the Greeks; the case was examined at Rome, in the presence of the emperor and the pope, and Daniel was universally convicted of making false accusations and of lying, out of malice; he was surrendered to Gratianus for punishment but was granted his life following the intercession of Louis (Lodoïchos 1): Lib. Pont. 105. 110-112.
