A former Christian, Christianos 1 apostatised and became a Muslim; in 763/764 he was leader of the Skamaroi, when he was captured by agents of Constantine V (Konstantinos 7) and cruelly tortured and put to death at the harbour of Sophia near the church of St Thomas in Constantinople: Theoph. AM 6256 (Χριστιανός, ἀπὸ Χριστιανῶν μαγαρίτης καὶ πρῶτος τῶν Σκαμάρων). The context suggests that he and the Skamaroi were in Bulgaria, but the word "magarites" properly means one who apostatised to Islam.
