Chousanios 1 was a patrikios and tourmarches; owner of a seal dateable to the eighth century: Zacos and Veglery 1787A. The name and titles read: Χουσανίῳ πατρικίῳ καὶ τουρμάρχῃ. Zacos and Veglery suggest that the name may be the arabic Hussein. The combination of the high rank of patrikios with the post of tourmarches is striking; if Chousanios was of non-Byzantine origin (e.g. Arab), the rank was presumably conferred for political reasons.
