Cheilas 1 was a fellow-charioteer of the emperor Michael III (Michael 11); when his son (Anonymus 205) was baptised the emperor was a godfather and gave a hundred pounds of gold: Theoph. Cont. IV 21 (p. 172), V 27 (p. 253), Scyl., pp. 96-97. Cheilas 1 was riding for the white faction in chariot races in the reign of Michael III (Michael 11) on an occasion when news came of an invasion of Thrakesion by the Arabs (cf. Amr 2): Theoph. Cont. IV 36 (p. 198). The date is uncertain. Cf. Anonymus 51 and Anonymus 53.
