Budayr 1 was present at Nisibis in c. 684/689, which he kept for a while independent from Muhammad 2: Chron. 1234, ยง147 (p. 293)("after a short time he (i.e. Muhammad 2) held all of Mesopotamia apart from Nisibis, which was held by Budayr"). See also Michael the Syrian II, p. 469 and Bar Hebraeus, p. 103, who call him "Boraida" and say that he ruled at Nisibis. It is not clear whether he held Nisibis as legitimate governor for the caliph Abdulmalik 1 or was in revolt against his authority, but the implication seems to be that he was ruling on his own account.
