Bertoald 1 was ordained archbishop of Britain by pope Sergius I (Sergios 30, bishop of Rome from 687 to 701): Lib. Pont. 86. 16 ("hic ordinavit Bertoaldum Brittaniae archiepiscopum"). See Duchesne, Liber Pontificalis, p. 381, note 48. According to Bede, Hist. Eccl. V 8, cf. V 12, Berthwald was the eighth archbishop of Canterbury; he was consecrated overseas ("trans mare") on Sunday, 29 June 693, by Goduinus (Godwin), the metropolitan bishop of the Gauls. Duchesne identifies Goduinus with Gudinus, bishop of Lyons, and argues that "ordinavit" in this passage does not mean consecrated but refers to the grant of superior authority in Britain, which came from the bishop of Rome and was symbolised by the grant of the pallium.
