Textual SourcesLateran Council = Concilium Lateranense anno 649 celebratum, ed. R. Riedinger, ACO II 1 (Berlin, 1984) (conciliar)

Benediktos 8 was bishop of Aiacium (in Corsica); he attended all five sessions of the Lateran Council, from 5 October to 31 October 649, and in the list of bishops present is named in eighth place: Conc. Lat., p. 2, line 16 (Βενεδίκτου ἐπισκόπου Αἰακίου), p. 3, line 16 (Benedicto Aiaceno episcopo) (the first session), cf. pp. 31, 111, 177 and 247 (the Latin version only is repeated for the other sessions). At the third session he proposed the reading of the heretical seventh chapter of Cyrus of Alexandria and of the letter to Cyrus from Sergios of Constantinople agreeing with him: Conc. Lat., p. 132, line 3 (Βενέδικτος ὁ εὐλαβέστατος ἐπίσκοπος Αἰακίου) with p. 133, line 3 ("Benedictus venerabilis episcopus insulae Corsicae"), p. 132, lines 26-27 with p. 133, line 25. At the fourth session he proposed the condemnation as a heretic of the patriarch Paulos 2 of Constantinople, because his own writings and actions demonstrated his agreement with his heretical predecessors Sergios and Pyrrhos: Conc. Lat., p. 192, line 21 (Βενέδικτος ὁ θεοφιλέστατος ἐπίσκοπος Αἰακίου) with p. 193, line 21 ("Benedictus reverentissimus episcopus Aiacensis"), p. 194, line 9 with p. 195, line 9. He subscribed the definition of the faith agreed by the Council at its fifth session: Conc. Lat., p. 392, line 3 (Βενέδικτος ἐπίσκοπος Αἰακίου), p. 393, line 3 ("Benedictus episcopus sanctae Aiacensis ecclesiae").
