Benediktos 4 was archbishop of Milan; during the papacy of Constantine (Konstantinos 136) (708/715) he visited Rome to pray and to meet the pope; Benediktos 4 claimed the right to ordain the bishop of Ticinum but was proved wrong since it was a prerogative of the papacy: Lib. Pont. 90. 9 ("Benedictus archiepiscopus Mediolanensis"), Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 29. Described as a man of outstanding sanctity ("vir egregiae sanctitatis"), whose fame spread throughout Italy: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 29.
