Bassoes was the family name of Bassoes 1; see Winkelmann, Quellenstudien, p. 164.

Bassoes 1 came of distinguished ancestors (ὁ περιφανὴς ἐκ τῶν προγόνων): Mart. XLII Amor., BHG 1210 p. 48. Bassoes 1 was one of the Roman commanders captured in Amorion in 838 and carried off to Syria into captivity by the Arabs: Leo Gramm. 224 (called Βασσόης), Ps.-Symeon 638 (Βασόης), Georg. Mon. Cont. 805 (Βασόης). Bassoes 1 is styled ὁ δρομεὺς: Ps.-Symeon 638, Georg. Mon. Cont. 805. The meaning is obscure. Bassoes 1 is named in the list of strategoi, where his name occurs last after a turmarch and a droungarios, but he is named before (unnamed) officers commanding tagmata (τινες ἄρχοντες τῶν ταγμάτων) who were also captured; see Kallistos 1. The dromeis are recorded in 899 in Philotheus (Oikonomides, Listes, p.181) as relatively low-ranking officials of the demes at Constantinople.

Bassoes 1 was one of the forty-two martyrs of Amorion, executed by the Arabs after seven years in captivity (on 6 March 845): Mart. XLII Amor., passim (called Βασόη). During captivity Bassoes 1 debated with the Arabs who were sent to convert the prisoners: Mart. XLII Amor., BHG 1211 p. 4. Also named among the martyrs: Mart. XLII Amor., BHG 1212 p. 17, BHG 1213 p. 29, BHG 1210 p. 48, BHG 1214 p. 70, cf. 79ff. (named in hymns).
