Barsanouphios 1 was a monk and hegoumenos of the monastery of Dagouta at Hypninos in Phrygia (Βαρσανούφιος δέ τις μοναχὸς καὶ ἡγούμενος τῆς κατὰ τὴν Φρυγίαν εἴτουν Δαγούτας μονῆς μιᾶς τῶν ἐν Ὑπνινῷ); for twenty-three years he was troubled by a hacking cough, and then he caught a fever which persisted for ten months in spite of all medical care and threatened to be mortal; finally he visited the tomb of St Peter of Atroa (Petros 34) and asked for his prayers for either a cure or death; he remained there for a fortnight, until the day of the Commemoration of the Saint, and then anointed himself with the holy oil at the tomb; he was immediately cured of all his ailments, in the presence of a great crowd; he returned to his monastery and was greeted with astonishment at his recovery: Vita Petr. Atr. 112 (Vita Petr. Atr. Retractata, pp. 167-169).
