Barbatos 4 was bishop of Cumae (in Campania); he attended all five sessions of the Lateran Council, from 5 October to 31 October 649, and in the list of bishops present is named in seventy-seventh place: Conc. Lat., p. 6, line 6 (Βαρβάτου ἐπισκόπου Κούμων), p. 7, line 6 ("Barbato Cumano episcopo") (the first session), cf. pp. 33, 113, 181 and 251 (the Latin version only is repeated for the other sessions). Barbatos 4 subscribed the definition of the faith agreed by the Council at its fifth session: Conc. Lat., p. 398, line 17 (Βαρβάτος ἐπίσκοπος Κουμῶν), p. 399, line 17 ("Barbatus episcopus sanctae Cumanensis ecclesiae").
