Baanes 1 was a leader of the Paulicians; his mother was an Armenian woman who was one of the disciples of Ioseph 1; she bore Baanes 1 after an adulterous relationship with a fellow disciple who was supposedly of Jewish descent; Baanes 1 was also a disciple of "Epaphroditos" (i.e. Ioseph 1) and claimed to teach the same doctrines as Ioseph 1 had taught; he was the successor of Ioseph 1 as "teacher of wickedness" (τῆς κακίας διδάσκαλος); subsequently he came under heavy criticism from Sergios 1, not for his teachings but for his conduct and for a time the sect was divided between the followers of Baanes 1 (Baniotae) and the followers of Sergios (Sergiotae): Peter of Sicily, 170-172. See the discussion by P. Lemerle, "L'Histoire des Pauliciens d'Asie Mineure d'après les sources grecques", in TM 5 (1970).
