Autchar 1 was a Frankish dux; in 753 Autchar 1 and bishop Chrodegang 1 arrived in Rome as envoys from Pippin (Pepin 1) to escort the bishop of Rome, Stephen III (II) (Stephanos 8), to Francia; Autchar 1 and Chrodegang 1 found Stephanos 8 on the point of setting out to visit the Lombard king Aistulf 1: Lib. Pont. 94. 18 ("missi iamfati Pippini regis Francorum coniunxerunt, id est Rodigangus episcopus et Autcharius dux"). Pope Stephanos 8 (accompanied by the envoys) left Rome on 14 October 753: Lib. Pont. 94. 19. When they entered Lombard territory forty miles from Rome, Autchar 1 went on ahead to Ticinum (Pavia) to await the arrival of the pope Stephanos 8: Lib. Pont. 94. 20 ("unus ex eisdem Francorum missis, scilicet Autcharius dux"). At Ticinum the Frankish envoys ("praedicti vero Francorum missi") put strong pressure on Aistulf 1 to allow Stephanos 8 to visit Francia: Lib. Pont. 94. 22. In 772 Autchar 1 accompanied the wife (widow) and children of the late king Carloman (Karoulomannos 2) when they fled to the Lombard king, Desiderius (Desiderios 3): Lib. Pont. 97. 9. He accompanied Desiderios 3 and the Lombard army when the Lombards marched south against Rome: Lib. Pont. 97. 23. After the bishop of Rome Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1) drew up an anathema against Desiderios 3 and Autchar 1 if either ever entered Roman territory without papal permission, the expedition withdrew: Lib. Pont. 97. 25. In 773, when Charlemagne (Karoulos 1) invaded Italy and Desiderios 3 fled to Pavia, Autchar 1 with Karoulomannos 2's wife and sons was taken to Verona by Adalgisos 1: Lib.Pont. 97. 31. There they surrendered to the Franks when Karoulos 1 arrived with a contingent in pursuit of Adalgisos 1: Lib. Pont. 97. 34.
