Atrophilos 1 was an old man when he was sent as envoy by the emperor Michael III (Michael 11) to the caliph al-Mutawwakil 1 in the year 1176 Sel. (864/865); he took with him seventy seven Arab captives as a gift to the caliph, was received with honour and negotiated peace: Bar Hebr., p. 144.
