Asan 1 was emir of Palestine (ἀμῆραν Παλαιστίνης) in 684, when Marwan 1 was proclaimed caliph: Theoph. AM 6175. Emir of Palestine; he made Marouam (Marwan 1) ruler of the Arabs after the death of Yezid (Yezid 1): Const. Porph., DAI 21, 41ff. (his name is here given as "Ousas"). Possibly identical with Hassan ibn Nu'man. In A. H. 78 (March 697/March 698) = 1008 Sel. (696/697) the Ghassanite Hassan ibn Nu'man invaded Roman territory on orders from the caliph `Abd al-Malik (Abdulmalik 1) and returned victorious; in the same year he was defeated and put to flight by the queen of the Berbers (in Africa), losing all his companions: Elias, Chron., p. 153, 24 - p. 154, 4 = p. 74. In A. H. 84 (Jan. 703/Jan. 704) = 1014 Sel. (702/703) Hassan ibn Nu'man invaded Africa and defeated and killed the queen of the Berbers and many of her troops: Elias, Chron., p. 156, 7-14 = p. 75. Hassan ibn an-Nu'man al-Ghassani became ruler of Africa, campaigned against the Queen of the Berbers and was defeated; in a later incursion he killed the Queen and carried off many captives, sending them to `Abd al-`Aziz (Abdul Aziz 2) in Egypt: Baladhuri, tr. Hitti, p. 360.
