Arichis 3 was a Lombard; he was a son of Warnefrit 1 and Theodelinda 1 and brother of Paul the Deacon (Paulos 52); he was named after his grandfather, Arichis 2: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. IV 37. He also had a sister, Anonyma 51: Paul. Diac., Versus ad regem precando (cited under Paulos 52).

After a revolt at Forum Iulii in 776 Arichis 3 was carried off into captivity in Francia, where seven years later his brother, Paulos 52, went to try to secure his release, to relieve his wife and their four children from poverty: Paul. Diac., Versus ad regem precando (Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang., ed. Waitz, intro., pp. 5-6, lines 7-12: "Captivus vestris extunc germanus in horis Est meus, afflicto pectore, nudus, egens. Illius in patria coniux miseranda per omnes Mendicat plateas ore tremente cibos. Quattuor hac turpi natos sustentat ab arte, Quos vix pannuciis praevalet illa tegi").
