Ansegis 1 was the son of Arnulf (bishop of Metz); he ruled the Franks as maior domus ("aput Gallias in Francorum regnum Anschis, Arnulfi filius ... sub nomine maioris domui gerebat principatum"): Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 23. He lived in the mid seventh century; Paul the Deacon (Paulos 52) wrongly places him in the early eighth century in the course of his narrative.
