Anonymus 701 became a monk at an early age and died after a lifetime in God's service at an advanced age; during the persecution under Leo V (Leo 15) he was arrested and beaten, receiving a flogging and a blow to the face that knocked out two of his teeth; after several years of imprisonment he was released and returned to the life of a monk; he later became a stylite and later still, until his death, a recluse (ἔγκλειστος); his life and death are recorded by Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite): Theod. Stud., Catech. Parva 121 (pp. 419ff. Auvray). His release from prison was presumably in 821, after the death of Leo 15, and Anonymus 701 therefore died between 821 and 826 (death of Theodoros 15), probably c. 824.
