Anonymus 587 was the representative (ὁ διέπων) of the emperor Theophilos (Theophilos 5), left in Constantinople when Theophilos 5 was away on campaign against the Saracens in Cilicia; on the emperor's triumphant return Anonymus 587 was among the high ranking dignitaries who met Theophilos 5 at Hieria (the others included the augousta (Theodora 2), the magistros (Anonymus 588), and the eparch of the city (Anonymus 589): Const. Porph., Military Treatises, C 812-814 (Reiske 503-504). When Theophilos 5 entered the Golden Gate, Anonymus 587, the magistros Anonymus 588 and the eparch of the City Anonymus 589 presented Theophilos 5 with a bejewelled crown: Const. Porph., Military Treatises, C 846-849 (Reiske 503-506). The date is usually accepted as 831, cf. Haldon, Expeditions, p. 285, but see W. T. Treadgold, "The Chronological Accuracy of the Chronicle of Symeon the Logothete for the Years 813-845", in DOP 33 (1979), p. 178 for an alternative dating of 837.
