Anonymus 581 was the bishop of Smyrna; he was an iconoclast who kept Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite) in prison in Smyrna for twenty months at the end of the reign of Leo V (Leo 15): Vita C Theod. Stud. §54, p. 290 (τῷ Σμύρνης προέδρῳ ... ἀνδρὶ προστάτῃ τοῦ κάκου καὶ τῆς ἀσεβείας ὑφηγήτῃ). He was therefore bishop of Smyrna in 819 and 820. He anointed Bardas 30 with oil blessed by himself (παρὰ τοῦ ἀπατεῶνος ἐπισκόπου), and this was allegedly the reason why Bardas 30, who had recovered from illness after Theodoros 15 had prayed for him, again fell ill and died: Vita C Theod. Stud. §56, p. 291.
