Anonymus 556 was the city prefect (τὸν τὴν πολιταρχίαν τότε πεπιστευμένον) of Constantinople; after the escape of the Slav king Perboundos 1 from custody in Constantinople (in 675/676) the prefect was apparently exiled to Thessalonike by the angry emperor (from the dating, Konstantinos 2): Mir. Dem. II 4, 236 (ὡς καὶ αὐτὸν τὸν τὴν πολιταρχίαν τότε πεπιστευμένον ἀγανακτηθέντα ἐνθάδε (i.e. to Thessalonike) σταλῆναι). It is not clear whether Anonymus 556 was banished to Thessalonike or was sent there in connection with an anticipated attack on the city by the Slavs. On the date of these events, see Lemerle, Les plus anciens recueils, II, pp. 128-133.
