Anonymus 304 was a young man (νεανίσκος) at Ainos; when he saw Gregory the Decapolite (Gregorios 79) at Ainos he dismounted from his horse, took his stick and gave him a severe beating, for no apparent reason; when Anonymus 304 recovered his temper he asked Gregorios 79 his name and religion and, learning that he was a Christian and orthodox (presumably meaning a venerator of icons; the date was probably 833, during the persecution of iconoclasts under the emperor Theophilos 5), he apologised for losing his temper and Gregorios 79 advised him not to give way to his temper in future: Ignatius, Vita Greg.
