Anonymus 301 was a holy man, well-versed in the Scriptures, who lived in or near Thessalonike; he possessed relics of the Apostle St Bartholomaios, which he gave to Ioseph 12 (Joseph the Hymnographer) when Ioseph 12 was living at Thessalonike: Theophanes, Vita Ioseph. Hymnog. 9 (πρὸς ἀνδρὸς ὁσιωτάτου καὶ ὑψηλοῦ τὰ θεῖα), Ioannes, Vita Ioseph. Hymnog. 961D (παρά τινος θείου ἀνδρὸς καὶ τὴν γνῶσιν οὐ μιμήτου).
