Anonymus 298 was a bishop who was held in custody in Crete at the same time as Ioseph 12 (Joseph the Hymnographer); under the stress of his prison sufferings he was yielding and inclining towards accepting the arguments of the iconoclasts, when Ioseph 12 encouraged him and strengthened his belief in the veneration of icons: Theophanes, Vita Ioseph. Hymnog. 6, Ioannes, Vita Ioseph. Hymnog. 957A-B. Their captors, described as barbarians, were certainly Arabs; Anonymus 298 was perhaps a bishop in Crete. The date was c. 841.
