Anonymus 290 was a komes (ἄλλος δέ τις τὴν τοῦ κόμητος διέπων ἀξίαν), present in Thessalonike, where he was convicted of some offence, sent to prison and sentenced to death by the local magistrate (παρὰ τοῦ τὸν τόπον ἐξουσιάζοντος); Gregory the Decapolite (Gregorios 79), miraculously knowing about the affair before anyone could tell him, intervened on his behalf with the governor (πρὸς τὸν ἄρχοντα) and secured the cancellation of the death sentence and the Anonymus 290's release from prison: Ignatius, Vita Greg. Dec. 16. The man had perhaps been condemned by a lower authority and was released after Gregorios 79's intervention with a higher.
