Anonymus 255 was an armed official at the palace with the title of proximos, sent by the emperor Constantine V (Konstantinos 7) to remove Stephanos 2 (Stephen the Younger) from the praitorion to the Maura outside the city; the order was quickly changed and Stephanos 2 returned to the praitorion: Vita Steph. The date was during the Brumalia (in November) 765 (shortly before the death of Stephanos 2). The proximos was a junior officer in the Scholai; see Haldon, Byzantine Praetorians, pp. 285-286.
