Anonymus 249 was a messenger whom pope Stephen III (II) (Stephanos 8) sent to the Lombard king Aistulf 1 to obtain a safe conduct for the pope and his companions for the visit which the emperor (Constantine V, i.e. Konstantinos 7) had ordered Stephanos 8 to pay the king to ask for the return of Ravenna and other places seized by the Lombards; on the messenger's safe return Stephanos 8 was making ready to set out, when envoys from the Franks also arrived: Lib. Pont. 94. 17 ( suum missum ).
