Anonymus 248 was an imperial official (ἕτερός τις ἄρχων), sent by the emperor Constantine V (Konstantinos 7) to restore Stephen the Younger (Stephanos 2) to his monastery after Kallistos 8 had removed him from it; at the time a war with the Scythians (i.e. the Bulgars) was imminent (and the troops with Kallistos 8 were perhaps required for that purpose): Vita Steph. Iun. 131.10 (1125B).
