Anonymus 244 was the abbot of the monastery of St Vincent (near the Vulturnum); perhaps in late 752 he and the abbot of St Benedict (Monte Cassino) (Anonymus 245) were sent to the Lombard king Aistulf 1 by pope Stephen III (II) (Stephanos 8) asking for an end to bloodshed and for peace between the two peoples; Aistulf 1 treated them with disdain and sent them straight back to their monasteries, forbidding them to return to the pope: Lib. Pont. 94. 7. Raymond Davies, in his translation of the Liber Pontificalis gives his name as Azzo, but we can find no authority for this; the incident does not occur in Paul the Deacon's Historia Langobardorum. The names Azzo (and Optatus) are given in the Regesta Pontificum (see Azzo 1 and Optatos 2), but the reference is to this same Life of pope Stephen III (II) (Stephanos 8).
