Anonymus 240 was a komes in Italy; he was sent with troops from Ravenna and various other strongholds by the exarch Paulos 48 to Rome to depose and kill pope Gregory II (Gregorios 72) ( Paulus patricius ad perficiendum tale scelus quos seducere potuit ex Ravenna cum suo comite atque ex castris aliquos misit ); Romans and Lombards alike combined to stop him, the Spoletini stopping him at Pons Salarius and various Lombard duces hampering his movements elsewhere: Lib. Pont. 91. 16. He was apparently a military officer at Ravenna and possibly attached to the exarch of Italy. The date was apparently before the iconoclast controversy, which began in c. 727 with the order of Leo III (Leo 3) against images. Pons Salarius was presumably on the Via Salaria near Rome.
