Anonymus 227 was apparently leader of the choir which used to sing psalms in the imperial bedchamber during the reign of Leo the Armenian (Leo V, Leo 15); he had the title of protopsaltes (ὁ τῶν τῷ βσιλικῷ κοιτῶνι κεκληρωμένων τηνικαῦτα ὢν χορολέκτης, ὃν πρωτοψάλτην καλεῖν παρέλαβεν ἡ συνήθεια); he was an enthusiastic iconoclast (οὗτος γὰρ τῆς τῶν εἰκονομάχων αἱρέσεως) and encouraged Leo 15 to take measures against the veneration of icons: Zon. XV 20. 13-15, cf. Genesius I 15 (ἄνδρα πανοῦργον, ὃς ἐπιστατῶν τοῦ ἱεροῦ τάγματος ἐν τοῖς ἀνακτόροις ἐτύγχανεν).
