Anonymus 203 was the tutor (παιδαγωγὸς) of the emperor Michael III (Michael 11); he is described in the sources as ill bred and of inferior character (ἀνάγωγός τε καὶ πόρρωθεν τρόπων τῶν εὐγενῶν; Theoph. Cont. IV 19 (p. 169), or similar); the emperor planned to confer on him high dignity and honour (ἀνωτέρω τῶν βασιλικῶν ἀξιωμάτων ἀναγαγεῖν καὶ μείζονα τούτῳ ἐπιβραβεῦσαι τιμήν; Theoph. Cont. IV 19, p. 169) but was resisted by Theoktistos 3 on the grounds that such action was unworthy of the imperial dignity; this gave Bardas 5 the opportunity to turn the emperor Michael 11 against Theoktistos 3 and plot his downfall: Theoph. Cont. IV 19 (p. 169), Scyl., p. 94, Zon. XVI 2. 25-28 (παιδαγωγὸς ἦν, ἀνδράριόν).
