Anonymus 198 was a katepano of Paphlagonia; in c. 833 he accompanied Petronas 7 with a fleet to Cherson; the larger vessels remained there and Anonymus 198 possibly travelled on with Petronas 7 in the smaller vessels to Sarkel on the Don where Petronas 7 was to build a fortress for the Khazars: Theoph. Cont. III 28 (p. 123) (Petronas 7 went μετὰ χελανδίων βασιλικοπλωΐμων καὶ τοῦ Κατεπάνω τῆς Παφλαγονίας), Const. Porph., DAI 42, 31 (κατεπάνω Παφλαγονίας). Anonymus 198 was probably a naval official subordinate to the strategos of Paphlagonia, stationed at Amastris; cf. Oikonomides, Listes, p. 349.
