Anonymus 61 was a military commander who fought for the emperor Michael II (Michael 10) against Thomas the Slav (Thomas 7) (τις τοῦ Βυζαντίου στρατηγέτης); an enemy of Thomas 7 and of Zacharias 7, he arrested the latter and imprisoned him under heavy guard (supposedly of one thousand soldiers) on the fortified island of Phygella, in the sea; following prayers from Peter of Atroa (Petros 34) Zacharias 7 escaped: Vita Petr. Atr. 39, p. 149. On Phygella, a promontory (not an island) on the coast of the Thrakesion theme, see Laurent, Vita Retractata, p. 149, note 3. Anonymus 61 may therefore have been strategos of the Thrakesion theme.
