Anonymus 40 was the brother of Nikolaos 6; a doctor, Anonymus 40 was in the employ of Theophilos 7 (Theophilitzes); through his brother Nikolaos 6, Anonymus 40 met Basilios 7 (the future emperor Basil I) and recommended him to Theophilitzes (Theophilos 7) as suitable to take charge of Theophilos 7 s horses: Leo Gramm. 234 (ἰατρόν, ὃς ἐδούλευεν τὸν Θεοφιλίτζην), Georg. Mon. Cont. 820, Ps.-Symeon 656, Zon. XVI 6. 18-21 (τὴν ἰατρικὴν μετιὼν καὶ τῷ Θεοφιλίτζῃ ὑπηρετῶν). The date was mid ninth century. Anonymus 40 plays no role in the story as told in the Vita Basilii Augusti in Theoph. Cont. V 9 (pp. 223-225).
