Anastasios 36 was a bishop (sanctissimum virum episcopum); he and the priest Sergius (Sergios 50) were sent as envoys (missi) to the Frankish king Carolus (Charles Martel; Karoulos 2) by sea with the keys of St Peter to ask for help against Lombard oppression: Lib. Pont. 92. 14 (later recension only).
