Anastasios 27 was the son of Andreas; he was a Christian and was governor of Edessa under the Arabs in the reign of the caliph Abdulmalik 1 until Muhammad 2 turned on the Christian leaders in Mesopotamia and Armenia and killed him and plundered his household; "up to that time the Christians had been scribes and leaders and governors of the Arab regions": Chron. 1234, ยง148 (p. 294).
