A Lombard soldier, Amalong 1 was the royal standard bearer ("unus de regis exercitu nomine Amalongus, qui regium contum ferre erat solitus"); in 663 at the battle of Forinus his action in striking a Roman horseman headlong from his horse allegedly terrified the Roman army under Saburrus 1 into flight: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. V 10. He presumably served normally under king Grimoald 3 rather than under Grimoald 3's son Romoald 1 who was in command at Forinus but had troops of Grimoald 3 under him.
