Alustria 1 was the son of Araq ('lwstry' br 'rq); a native of Harran (Carrhae); Alustria 1 was a prisoner of the Romans in 705 when the emperor Justinian II (Ioustinianos 1) returned to power; at Alustria 1's request Justinian II (Ioustinianos 1) released all six thousand other Arab prisoners held by the Romans and was himself set free and sent home with gifts: Chron. 1234, ยง152 (p. 298). Palmer, Monk and Mason, p. 165, suggests identifying him with "Elustria" (= Illustrios), governor of Samosata mentioned in the Life of Theodotos.
