Akylas 1 was hypatos; owner of a seal dateable to the eighth century: Speck, Bleisiegel 40. Obv.: cruciform monogram of Θεοτόκε βοήθει with the legend .ω - σω - .ου - λω in the corners. Rev.: Ακυλα - υπατω - αμην. The full text reads: Θεοτόκε βοήθει τῷ σῷ δούλῳ Ἀκύλᾳ ὑπάτῳ, ἀμήν. The sketch by Speck gives the beta of the monogram in the form of the capital Latin R, a form not found before the early to mid ninth century; however, the photograph suggests the possibility of a line across the foot of the R, so an earlier date is possible. The same man was probably the owner of two other seals, dateable to the first half of the eighth century: Zacos and Veglery 3073a and b. Obv.: cruciform monogram of Θεοτόκε βοήθει, with τω - σω - δου - λω in the corners. Rev.: Ακυλα - υπατω - αμην.
