Aitherios 1 was chaplain and secretary of Charlemagne (Karoulos 1); he was present at Rome during the king's visit at Easter 774; at Karoulos 1's command he copied out the agreement between Karoulos 1 and pope Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1), based on promises formerly made at Quierzy between Pepin (Pepin 1) and pope Stephen III (II) (Stephanos 8), defining territories to be granted to the see of St Peter in Italy ("per Etherium, religiosum ac prudentissimum capellanum et notarium suum"): Lib. Pont. 97. 42. He then made another copy, which Karoulos 1 deposited in the Church of St Peter, over St Peter's body and underneath the gospels; another copy which the king (Karoulos 1) took back with him to Francia was made by the scrinium of the Church at Rome: Lib. Pont. 97. 43. Later Etherius (Aitherios 1) became abbot of the monastery of St Martin of Tours; Duchesne, Lib. Pont., p. 517, n. 34.
