Aetios 4 was patrikios, basilikos protospatharios and monostrategos of the Anatolikoi; owner of a seal dateable to the first half of the ninth century: Zacos and Veglery 1690A. Obv.: cruciform monogram of Κύριε βοήθει, with [τω] - σω - [δου] - λω in the corners. Rev.: +Αε[τ] - ιω πα[τρι] - κ' β' α' σπ' [και μ] - ονοστρ[ατη] - γω των [Αν - ατ]ολ[ικ']. The name and titles read: Ἀετίῳ πατρικίῳ βασιλικῷ πρωτοσπαθαρίῳ καὶ μονοστρατήγῳ τῶν Ἀνατολικῶν.

He may be identical with either Aetios 1 or Aetios 2; Zacos and Veglery suggest Aetios 2. The title monostrategos could apply to either man, both of whom had the troops of other themata under their overall command. Cf. Winkelmann, Rangstruktur, p. 78 (citing the opinion of Sokolova that this seal could not be dated in the 40s of the ninth century).
