Aethelwulf 1 was king of the Saxons who visited Rome during the papacy of Benedict III (Benediktos 7); his name is lost from the text of the Liber Pontificalis (see Duchesne, Lib. Pont. II, p. 150, note 26); he abdicated and went to Rome with gifts for St Peter's; at the request of Benediktos 7 he made a public distribution of gold and silver to the clergy and leading men of Rome and to the people; he then returned to his kingdom and died shortly afterwards: Lib. Pont. 106. 34. His pilgrimage to Rome is recorded in the Annales of Prudentius of Troyes; in 855 he travelled on a pilgrimage to Rome and was warmly treated en route by the emperor Karoulos 1: Prudentius, Annales s.a. 855 (PL 115. 1410). On his return in 856 he married the daughter of Charles, Iudith: Prudentius, Annales s.a. 856 (PL 115. 1411). In 858 he died: Prudentius, Annales s.a. 858 (PL 115. 1414).
