Adeodatos 3 was the bishop of Rome from 11 April 672 to 17 June 676. A native of Rome, he was the son of Iovianus (Iobianos 1) and was a monk: Lib. Pont. 79. 1. He was a monk in the monastery of St Erasmus on Mons Caelius, which he later enlarged with many new buildings: Lib. Pont. 79. 4 ("in monasterio sancti Herasmi situm in Celiomonte, in quo concrevisse visus est sanctissimus vir, multa nova edificia augmentavit"). He succeeded Vitalianus (Bitalianos 3) as bishop of Rome in 672. He was bishop for four years two months five days: Lib. Pont. 79. 1. He restored the Church of St Peter in the Via Portuense, near the Pons Meruli, and also enlarged the monastery of St Erasmus (see above), adding fresh cells, appointing an abbot and installing monks: Lib. Pont. 79. 4. He was buried in St Peter's on 26 June 676: Lib. Pont. 79. 6. He was a very big man, very kind and gentle and welcomed everyone from the highest to the lowest; he was compassionate to the sick, and ensured that salaries were paid properly: Lib. Pont. 79. 1.
