Adalbert 1 was described as a man of energy; he was a comes and held office in 846 (under the Frankish empire) as "marcensis et tutor Corsicanae insulae" ("Adelvertus comes, vir strenuus, hic cum esset marcensis et tutor Corsicanae insulae"); on 10 August 846 "X die mensis Augusti"; the year was indiction 9) he sent a letter to Rome warning of an imminent attack on Rome by an Arab force from the sea and urging that the treasures and relics of SS Peter and Paul be defended: Lib. Pont. 104. 44A. His warning was largely ignored and the Arab force landed in Italy on 23 August 846: Lib. Pont. 104. 45A. On his office, cf. Duchesne, Lib. Pont. II, p. 104, note 35 (he was marchio or praefectus marcae, governing Tuscany and supervising Corsica).
